Near Death Experiences

A near-death experience (NDE) refers to a broad range of personal experiences associated with impending death, encompassing multiple possible sensations including detachment from the body; feelings of levitation; total serenity, security, or warmth; the experience of absolute dissolution; and the presence of a light.

These phenomena are usually reported after an individual has been pronounced clinically dead or otherwise very close to death, hence the term near-death experience. Many NDE reports, however, originate from events that are not life-threatening. With recent developments in cardiac resuscitation techniques, the number of reported NDEs has increased. The experiences have been described in medical journals as having the characteristics of hallucinations, while parapsychologists, religious believers and some mainstream scientists have pointed to them as evidence of an afterlife and mind-body dualism.

Popular interest in near-death experiences was initially sparked by Weiss's 1972 The Vestibule, followed by Raymond Moody's 1975 book Life After Life and the founding of the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS) in 1981. According to a Gallup poll, approximately eight million Americans claim to have had a near-death experience. Some commentators, such as Simpson, claim that the number of near-death experiencers may be underestimated. People who have had a near-death experience may not be comfortable discussing the experience with others, especially when the NDE is understood as a paranormal incident.

NDEs are among the phenomena studied in the fields of psychology, psychiatry, and hospital medicine.

New NDE Study  ( 1 Hr. : 13 mins)

Interview with George Noory

NDE researcher Dr. Jeffrey Long reacted critically to a new study that claims near-death experiences such as flashes of light may be caused by patients' high levels of carbon dioxide. He did not find the study convincing, as it used only a small sample group.

Dr. Jeffrey Long is a leading near-death experience (NDE) researcher. He founded the Near Death Experience Research Foundation (nderf.org), and two other web sites devoted to experiences related to NDE, After Death Communication Research Foundation (adcrf.org) and Out of Body Experience Research Foundation (oberf.org). Dr. Long also serves on the Physician Advisory Committee of IANDS (International Association for Near-Death Studies (iands.org) and Chairs the IANDS Research Committee. This family of web sites is the largest publicly accessible collection of exceptional human experiences of their type available. This is leading to increasing awareness that worldwide and across cultural boundaries we all share these types of experiences, and they are similar to a degree that is medically inexplicable.

Evidence of the Afterlife: The Science of Near-Death Experiences -

Book by Dr. Jeffrey Long

“There is currently more scientific evidence to the reality of near death experience (NDE) than there is for how to effectively treat certain forms of cancer,” states radiation oncologist Dr. Jeffrey Long is his groundbreaking new book Evidence of the Afterlife. In 1998 Dr. Long and his wife, Jody, began the Near Death Experience Research Foundation with the goal of creating a forum for near death “experiencers” to share their stories. Grounded in first-hand evidence culled from over 1,600 verified NDE accounts, Evidence of the Afterlife presents the strongest argument yet for the underlying truth of those who have died and returned to share their tales.

Raymond Moody - MD

In 1975, Dr. Raymond Moody's best-selling book Life After Life focused public attention on the near-death experience like never before, and it was Moody who actually coined the term "near-death experience." Dr. Moody is also the author of The Light Beyond, Reunions, Life After Loss, Coming Back, Reflections, and Glimpses of Eternity. He continues to capture public interest and generate controversy with his ground-breaking work on the near-death experience and what happens when we die.

Moody recorded and compared the experiences of 150 persons who died, or almost died, and then recovered. His research describes the results of decades of inquiry into the NDE phenomenon. He outlines nine elements that generally occur during NDEs.

Dr. Moody is the leading authority on the 'near-death experience'—a phrase he coined in the late seventies. Dr. Moody's research into the phenomenon of near-death experience had its start in the 1960's. The New York Times calls him "the father of the near-death experience."

investigates more than one hundred case studies of people who experienced "clinical death" and were subsequently revived.  First published in 1975, this classic exploration of life after death started a revolution in popular attitudes about the afterlife and established Dr. Moody as the world's leading authority in the field of near-death experiences.  Life after Life forever changed the way we understand both death -- and life -- selling millions of copies to a world hungry for a greater understanding of this mysterious phenomenon.

The extraordinary stories presented here provide evidence that there is life after physical death, as Moody recounts  the testimonies of those who have been to the "other side" and back -- all bearing striking similarities of an overwhelming positive nature. These moving and inspiring accounts give us a glimpse of the peace and unconditional love that await us all.

P. M. H. Atwater (born Phyllis Marie DeKeyser, September 19, 1937) is an American writer and researcher on subjects related to NDEs life and death issues, and spirituality from a New Thought point of view. - Atwater is one of the original researchers in the field of near-death studies, having begun her work in 1978 (shortly after moving to Virginia), and is a pioneer in subjects like near-death experiences, the aftereffects of spiritual experiences, transformations of consciousness, reality shifts, future memory, and modern generations of children and how they differ from previous generations.,,,

Present! - P.M.H. Atwater and the Near Death Experience ( 28 mins)

P.M.H. Atwater talks about her near death experience and about her research into the N.D.E..

Future Memory - by P.M.H. Atwater.

This book, written by a woman who had 3 near-death experiences in 1977, is the culmination of decades of research into the phenomenon of the "brain shift" that occurs with both NDE experiencers and those who experience it through other avenues. Drawing on the best thinking in science and metaphysics, the conclusions are not only fascinating reading on their own, but also provide much insight and support for many of the statements and facts contained in the Operation Terra material.

There are different paths to future memory.

Author P.M.H. Atwater says the future memory allows people to "live" life in advance and remember the experience in detail when something triggers that memory.

Atwater says the unifying, and permanent, effect of that experience is a "brain shift" which she believes "may be at the very core of existence itself." In Future Memory, Atwater shows that structural and chemical changes are occurring in our brains, changes indicative of higher evolutionary development.

The author, one of the foremost investigators of the near-death experience (NDE), experienced the future memory process firsthand following her own three NDEs. She shows how these "rehearsals" for future events differ from other modes of futuristic awareness such as Clairvoyance, Precognition, and Déjà vu.

Future Memory:

  •  - Provides a series of steps to assist in developing future memory
     - Explores new models of time, existence, and consciousness
     - Presents an in-depth study of the brain shift and how it can be experienced
     - Offers an extensive appendix, resource manual, and notes

Future Memory is an important step in understanding the relationship between human perception and reality.

Consciousness Beyond Life: The Science of the Near-Death Experience by Pim van Lommel

Dr. Pim van Lommel – Holland

According to the studies, the current materialistic view of the relationship between the brain and consciousness held by most physicians, philosophers and psychologists is too restricted for a proper understanding of this phenomenon. There are good reasons to assume that our consciousness does not always coincide with the functioning of our brain: enhanced consciousness can sometimes be experienced separate from the body. Van Lommel has come to the inevitable conclusion that most likely the brain must have a facilitating and not a producing function to experience consciousness. By making a scientific case for consciousness as a nonlocal and thus ubiquitous phenomenon he questions a purely materialist paradigm in science. – In other Words, Consciousness-Mind is separate from the Brain!!

As a cardiologist, Pim van Lommel was struck by the number of his patients who claimed to have near-death experiences as a result of their heart attacks. As a scientist, this was difficult for him to accept: Wouldn't it be scientifically irresponsible of him to ignore the evidence of these stories? Faced with this dilemma, van Lommel decided to design a research study to investigate the phenomenon under the controlled environment of a cluster of hospitals with a medically trained staff.

For more than twenty years van Lommel systematically studied such near-death experiences in a wide variety of hospital patients who survived a cardiac arrest. In 2001, he and his fellow researchers published his study on near-death experiences in the renowned medical journal The Lancet. The article caused an international sensation as it was the first scientifically rigorous study of this phenomenon. Now available for the first time in English, van Lommel offers an in-depth presentation of his results and theories in this book that has already sold over 125,000 copies

The Weight of the Soul

In 1901, MacDougall weighed six patients while they were in the process of dying from tuberculosis in an old age home. It was relatively easy to determine when death was only a few hours away, and at this point the entire bed was placed on an industrial sized scale which was apparently sensitive to the gram. He took his results (a varying amount of perceived mass loss in most of the six cases) to support his hypothesis that the soul had mass, and when the soul departed the body, so did this mass. The determination of the soul weighing 21 grams was based on the average loss of mass in the six patients within moments after death. Experiments on mice and other animals took place. Most notably the weighing upon death of sheep seemed to create mass for a few minutes which later disappeared. The hypothesis was made that a soul portal formed upon death which then whisked the soul away.

Near Death Experiences – "Experiencers"

Oldest NDE on record: written by Plato in 380 BC

The oldest surviving explicit report of a NDE in Western literature comes from the famed Greek philosopher Plato who, in the year 380 BC, described such an event in the tenth book of his legendary work entitled Republic. Although it's called the "Myth of Er", the word "myth" in this case means "word, speech, account," rather than the modern meaning. The story begins as a man named Er dies in battle. Ten days later, when the bodies of those who died in the battle are collected, Er's body has not decomposed. Two days later he revives on his funeral-pyre and tells others of his journey into the afterlife, including an account of reincarnation and the celestial spheres of the astral plane. The tale introduces the idea that moral people are rewarded and immoral people are punished after death. The story includes an account of the cosmos and the afterlife that greatly influenced religious, philosophical, and scientific thought for many centuries ...

Carl Jung

"Your visions will become clear

only when you can look into

your own heart.

 Who looks outside, dreams;

who looks inside, awakes."
–Carl Jung–

Carl Jung's Near-Death Experience  1944 - Article

In a hospital in Switzerland in 1944, the world-renowned psychiatrist Carl G. Jung, had a heart attack and then a near-death experience. His vivid encounter with the light, plus the intensely meaningful insights led Jung to conclude that his experience came from something real and eternal. Jung's experience is unique in that he saw the Earth from a vantage point of about a thousand miles above it. His incredibly accurate view of the Earth from outer space was described about two decades before astronauts in space first described it. Subsequently, as he reflected on life after death, Jung recalled the meditating Hindu from his near-death experience and read it as a parable of the archetypal Higher Self, the God-image within. Carl Jung, who founded analytical psychology, centered on the archetypes of the collective unconscious. The following is an excerpt from his autobiography entitled Memories, Dreams, Reflections describing his near-death experience.

The beginning of 1944 I broke my foot, and this misadventure was followed by a heart attack. In a state of unconsciousness, I experienced deliriums and visions which must have begun when I hung on the edge of death and was being given oxygen and camphor injections. The images were so tremendous that I myself concluded that I was close to death. My nurse afterward told me:

"It was as if you were surrounded by a bright glow."

That was a phenomenon she had sometimes observed in the dying, she added. I had reached the outermost limit, and do not know whether I was in a dream or an ecstasy. At any rate, extremely strange things began to happen to me.

It seemed to me that I was high up in space. Far below I saw the globe of the Earth, bathed in a gloriously blue light. I saw the deep blue sea and the continents. Far below my feet lay Ceylon, and in the distance ahead of me the subcontinent of India. My field of vision did not include the whole Earth, but its global shape was plainly distinguishable and its outlines shone with a silvery gleam through that wonderful blue light. In many places the globe seemed colored, or spotted dark green like oxidized silver. Far away to the left lay a broad expanse - the reddish-yellow desert of Arabia; it was as though the silver of the Earth had there assumed a reddish-gold hue. Then came the Red Sea, and far, far back - as if in the upper left of a map - I could just make out a bit of the Mediterranean. My gaze was directed chiefly toward that. Everything else appeared indistinct. I could also see the snow-covered Himalayas, but in that direction it was foggy or cloudy. I did not look to the right at all. I knew that I was on the point of departing from the Earth.

Dannion Brinkley

Dannion Brinkley - NDE

You know, I have been dead so many times that I tend to view life from a slightly different perspective than most people. Some things that outwardly appear to be serious are not. While other things that do not appear serious, really are to me. -

Due to the near-death experience (NDE), my life was shoved under the scientific microscope, and was then catapulted into the spiritual spotlight, from the day I was struck by lightning….

In my first near death experience I met 13 Beings of Light who told me “those who go to Earth are the real heroes and heroines, because you are doing something that no other spiritual beings have the courage to do. You have gone to earth to co-create with God.”

Co-create with God. What better definition of spirituality could I have?

After giving me this advice the Spiritual Beings let me know exactly what I was to do when I returned.

First, I am to create the centers where people can go to reduce stress in their lives. “Through this reduction of stress,” said the Beings, “humans would come to realize, as we do, that they are higher spiritual beings.

Second, I am to create spiritualistic capitalism. The Beings told me spiritualistic capitalism was the best way to change thought processes about death, dying and spirituality. They told me how important it is for people to rely on their spiritual selves instead of government and religion.

Lastly, the Spiritual Beings imparted upon me an important message. Now, this message is the central theme wherever I go. Remember everybody, we are great, mighty and powerful spiritual beings with dignity, direction and purpose

 ( 1932 - 2011)

I just thought this was very Inspiring from Elisabeth Taylor....

For anyone whose lost someone, I hope you find comfort in this. May her soul RIP with him now.....

Interviewed by Larry King on CNN's Larry King Live and also by ABC News, famous actress Elizabeth Taylor spoke about her experience of dying on the operating table while undergoing surgery, and of passing through a tunnel towards a brilliant white light. Taylor said that while she was clinically dead, she had encountered the spirit of Michael Todd, one of her former husbands, whom she referred to as her great love. She had wanted to stay with Todd, she said, but he had told her that she had work and life ahead of her, and he "pushed me back to my life." Following her resuscitation, the eleven-person medical team, including doctors, nurses, etc., witnessed Taylor's testimonial of this event.

"I was pronounced dead once and actually saw the light. I find it very hard to talk about, actually, because it sounds so corny. It happened in the late '50s, and I saw Mike (Todd, Taylor's third husband, who was killed in a plane crash in 1958). When I came to, there were about 11 people in the room. I'd been gone for about five minutes - they had given me up for dead and put my death notice on the wall. I shared this with the people that were in the room next to me. Then after that I told another group of friends, and I thought, ‘Wow, this sounds really screwy. I think I'd better keep quiet about this.'"

Anita's Inspiring Near-Death Experience Story !!!!!!

As a follow-up to yesterday's story, today we publish another story about an NDE (Near Death Experience). Because they are often such fascinating stories and contain so much information about the truth of our existence.

Anita Moorjani was born in Singapore and then lived in Sri Lanka until she was 2 years old. An ethnic Sindhi woman from India, her family then moved to Hong Kong where she grew up speaking fluent Sindhi, Cantonese and English, as well as being conversant with a multitude of cultural idioms. She was educated in English schools in Hong Kong and later studied in England before returning to Hong Kong to take up a senior management position for a French fashion company where she traveled all over the world using her multi-cultural, multilingual background in a variety of business and social settings. In December 1995, she married her husband and soulmate, Danny, who loves her unconditionally (and still does, despite her becoming a NDE freak now).

In April 2002 she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and after nearly 4 years of battling the disease, she was taken to the intensive care unit of her local hospital in February 2006 where she was given less than 36 hours to live. Her remarkable NDE and seeming miraculous recovery from cancer has created enormous interest and commentary on an international scale.

Near-Death Experience Speaker & Educator Martha St. Claire in 1974
-Counselor & Spiritual Medium
-Hospice & Gerontology Background

This is the story of her near-death-experience:

“In 1974 while water skiing with friends, she took the last run of the day. The waves were choppy, so rough that she was forced to let go of the rope. As she fell, it wrapped around her forearm, dragging her beneath the water. Her boyfriend was driving the boat, chatting and drinking beer with his friend. They didn't notice that Cassandra was down. She didn't panic, but had thoughts like: "This is a problem. I blew it this time. If I die, Mom will be really mad at me."

As she struggled to hold her breath, she felt herself rise in the air, yet she saw her body just under the surface of the water, being dragged at high speed. She saw the two men in the boat talking to each other, oblivious to what was happening to her. She saw her three-year-old son playing on the shore. Cassandra was sucked into a tunnel where she could hear swishing and clicking sounds. She traveled fast toward the light at the other end, excited, feeling she was going someplace she had once been. She came out where there were flowers everywhere, brightly colored and gorgeous. Then she found herself surrounded by the universe, out in a galaxy with stars all around her. Although she couldn't see anything solid beneath her feet, she felt like she was standing on something.

Melchizedek came up to her. He didn't identify himself, but she recognized him and knew she had always known him. In the beautiful light that seemed like liquid love, Cassandra was the best of her. She stated, "I felt free. It was wonderful seeing him!"…

Dr Eben Alexander - the deepest Realms of Super-physical Existence

Interview with Lilou Mace ( 53 mins)

Dr. Eben Alexander NDE. Thousands of people have had near-death experiences, but scientists have argued that they are impossible. Dr. Eben Alexander was one of those scientists. A highly trained neurosurgeon, Alexander knew that NDEs feel real, but are simply fantasies produced by brains under extreme stress.

Then, Dr. Alexander's own brain was attacked by a rare illness. The part of the brain that controls thought and emotion—and in essence makes us human—shut down completely. For seven days he lay in a coma. Then, as his doctors considered stopping treatment, Alexander's eyes popped open. He had come back.

Alexander's recovery is a medical miracle. But the real miracle of his story lies elsewhere. While his body lay in coma, Alexander journeyed beyond this world and encountered an angelic being who guided him into the deepest realms of super-physical existence. There he met, and spoke with, the Divine source of the universe itself.

Alexander's story is not a fantasy. Before he underwent his journey, he could not reconcile his knowledge of neuroscience with any belief in heaven, God, or the soul. Today Alexander is a doctor who believes that true health can be achieved only when we realize that God and the soul are real and that death is not the end of personal existence but only a transition.

This story would be remarkable no matter who it happened to. That it happened to Dr. Alexander makes it revolutionary. No scientist or person of faith will be able to ignore it. Reading it will change your life.

The near-death experience radically transformed Kathleen's life in multiple ways. She will be a guest speaker at the 30th anniversary of the IANDS (International Association of Near-Death Studies)

90 Minutes in Heaven, the story of Reverend Don Piper

In 1989, Reverend Don Piper of Pasadena, California was travelling in a car when it was crushed by an 18-wheeler in a head-on crash. Paramedics declared him dead. He was without a pulse, he says, for 90 minutes before he came back to life after a passer-by began to pray and sing hymns over his body. "The steering wheel impaled me in the chest and then the car's roof collapsed on my head so there's just no way you could survive this accident," he said.

However, he says that the experience he had before rejoining the living could not be explained as anything other than life after death. He says he remembers music that was "beyond spectacular'" and aromas that he'd never smelled before. His grandfather was there to greet him alongside several others who had died before him. They all stood in front of a magnificent gate with lights that were "pulsating with life," he said. "You know, if I was having a dream about it, this wouldn't be in it," he said. "Some of these people who met me at the gates, I haven't thought of in decades."

Mr. Piper, who endured dozens of surgeries to fix his bones, had to learn to walk again. He wrote about the trauma in The New York Times best-seller 90 Minutes in Heaven: A True Story of Death and Life. He believes he was sent back to spread the message that "heaven is a real place."

Betty Malz

My glimpse of Eternity
Betty Malz's Near-Death Experience

In July of 1959, in Terre Haute, Indiana, when Betty Malz was twenty-seven years old, she was pronounced dead and a sheet was pulled over her head. In her book, My Glimpse of Eternity, Betty describes her experience on the other side and how she returned to her body to the stunned amazement of her grieving father and hospital personnel. Her book is the story of how God dealt with a proud, materialistic, controlling woman who had to die to learn how to live. The following is an excerpt from her book describing her near-death experience.

The transition was serene and peaceful. I was walking up a beautiful green hill. It was steep, but my leg motion was effortless and a deep ecstasy flooded my body. Despite three incisions in my body from the operations, I stood erect without pain, enjoying my tallness, free from inhibitions about it. I looked down. I seemed to be barefoot, but the complete outer shape of my body was a blur and colorless. Yet I was walking on grass, the most vivid shade of green I had ever seen. Each blade was perhaps one inch long, the texture like fine velvet; every blade was vibrant and moving. As the bottoms of my feet touched the grass, something alive in the grass was transmitted up through my whole body with each step I took.

"Can this be death?" I wondered. If so, I certainly had nothing to fear. There was no darkness, no uncertainty, only a change in location and a total sense of well-being....

Dead for 28 minutes, she caught a beautiful Glimpse of Heaven

Andrew Petro

Andy's New Book:
Remembering The Light Through Prosetry*

Andrew Petro Author of, 'Remembering the Light' - Book bout his Near Death Experience (  57 mins)

In 1955 Andrew Petro faced death; he would never be the same. He ate a light lunch, jumped in to the cold water with a belly flop. As he was swimming he began to cramp in his stomach and groin. He was drowning and gave into the voice that asked him to stop resisting death and promised he would return to life. He describes the experience in vivid detail. His senses were heightened. There was a bright light, much brighter than the sun. He was no longer in pain. The voice was one that brought comfort and reassuring strength. The light knew everything thing about him but offered no censure. Andy realized he was part of the light for it was encompassing. He never wanted to leave the light.
After his amazing near death experience, Andy had a desire to write. It actually went beyond desire; he was driven to write poetry. It was as though the poems were channeled through him. The poetry would come to him at night. He would wake up, begin to write, and within an hour the poem would be complete. The poetry seemed to serve a purpose . . . to help him remember the details of his NDE (Near Death Experience).

Andy always wakes up in the middle of the night because of the strange words and images whirling around in his head, and he can't get back to sleep. Some strange force compels him to get up and write. An hour later, he has transformed his disruptive thoughts into a poem from the other side.

Andy Petro is just a regular guy who happened to drown, die, and then return to earth. He is able to remember exactly what happened to him while he was earth-dead. When he returned to his body from his near death experience (NDE) he was not given any instructions, missions, or tasks to tell others about his encounter with the Light. He was frightened and very sad for many years.

THE DAY I DIED: BBC Documentary on Near Death Experiences

( 59 mins)

THE DAY I DIED is a BBC documentary about near-death-experiences, and the people that have had them. Made in 2002; the programme explores some of the controversial “continuation of consciousness” theories put forward by professors and examines the evidence. It is one of the best, and possibly the most comprehensive documentary on near death experiences, interviewing top scientists that HAVE studied the NDE phenomenon including Dr. Peter Fenwick, Pim Van Lommel, and Bruce Greyson.

There have been many stories in recent years claiming the BBC has not allowed it to go out on DVD or aired it since its first showing. I don’t know if that’s true, but I do know it’s well worth watching for anyone who is interested in the subject.

Multiple resuscitated individuals worldwide can report about conscious experiences minutes after cardiac arrest despite the fact that the EEG is flat after 15 seconds of cardiac arrest!
Conclusion: Consciousness is non-local and not an emergent property of the electrical nerve signals, which are absent during their very vivid, very conscious experiences...

Dr Eben Alexander - the deepest realms of Super-physical existence  ( 53 mins)

Reading it will change your life. http://www.lifebeyonddeath.net/

"I Survived... Beyond & Back"

This special profiles the extraordinary stories of three ordinary people who literally died and then came back to life. Deb's heart stops shortly after delivering her second child, Steve is brutally stabbed by his schizophrenic brother, and Michaela is severely injured in a deadly car accident--each one literally flatlines, yet has inexplicable but very real experiences while they are clinically dead. None of them had a preconceived notion of the afterlife--what happened to each of them during the period they flatlined is described with such compelling honesty that even the staunchest cynics will be left pondering these extraordinary experiences.
